From Horror to Hope

At one level I have lived in a state of horror for the past 55 years or so. Since I was about 7 I've watched, learned about and protested the deterioration of the natural world, it's inhabitants and ecosystems. What I lived in horror of is now taken as normal by millions who know nothing else, who never experienced a deep night sky, clean air and water, or the lavish sounds of nature from dozens of different birds, insects, frogs. I could go on and on with the losses.
I've just seen the lovely film about honey bees, Queen of the Sun, and recommend it as a crucial wake up call. The only thing I would have added to the movie would have been the understanding of bees taught in the 1960s and 70s by the late, great philosopher Alan Watts. It was hinted at in the film from the scientific understanding of the interdependence of bees and flowering plants. In fact, they arose together and Alan Watts calls their system the beeflower or flowerbee. They are inseparable.
In the same way, we are Earthhumans and we are Cosmospirits - all One, inseparable always.
Despite my near lifelong horror of the ongoing destruction we have created throughout nature, in our own hearts, between individuals, and between cultures, perhaps ensuring the extinction of our species, I have faith in the robust, powerful resiliency of nature, its potent blend of chaos and order I call homeodynamism. Because we are part of nature too, I see the human race waking up to embrace a loving stewardship of ourselves, each other and of the planet which sustains us.
Mother Earth will continue whatever we do, but will we? It is up to us to accept each other and all other parts of the Whole with love and appreciation. May we prove ourselves worthy of our Mother by showing resiliency of the heart and acting from love  rather than fear.

  1. Yes! When we trade our dominion mindset for one of stewardship, and realize we are one small part of the whole, then we can certainly turn our relationship with the physical world around! Thanks for the reminder! Monique
